Credit Report Errors & Identity Theft

Credit report mistakes can derail your ability to rent, borrow, or get a job. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) allows you to dispute and correct these errors.

We commonly see:

  • Accounts showing up that you never opened
  • Mixed files — someone else's credit on your report
  • Incorrect balances or late payments
  • Disputes filed but not corrected

Before calling us:

  • Pull your reports from www.annualcreditreport.com
  • Highlight the inaccurate entries
  • Send us any prior dispute letters

Identity Theft FAQs:

What is the first thing I should do if I suspect identity theft?

  • You must act fast. Start by placing a fraud alert with one credit bureau, freeze your credit to block new accounts, file a report at www.IdentityTheft.gov, and notify your bank and credit card companies to freeze compromised accounts.

Can I dispute fraudulent accounts on my credit report myself?

  • Yes. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you have the right to dispute inaccurate or fraudulent items. Send a dispute letter to the credit bureau and the company that reported the account. Include:
  • A copy of your credit report with the errors highlighted.
  • A police report or Identity Theft Report (if available).
  • Copies of any supporting documentation.
